How we work

How to book consecutive interpreting

From meeting details to agreed languages, an interpreter and booking conditions.

01

Describe your meeting

Provide the languages and directions, date, time, address or platform, topic, participant numbers and expected duration.

02

Agree the interpreter and quote

We will check availability, venue requirements, the service scope, total cost and rescheduling conditions.

03

Prepare the topic

Agree which materials and terminology the interpreter needs. Nominate an organiser contact and allow pauses for interpreting.

04

Confirm the arrangements

Check the start time, location, on-site contact and agreed duration. Sending an enquiry does not itself confirm a booking.

Meeting format

How interpreting with pauses works

A participant speaks

The speaker completes a thought and pauses. It helps to agree the length of contributions before the conversation starts.

The interpreter follows

The interpreter conveys the contribution to the other participant. They may take notes for longer passages; everyone speaks in turn.

A reply or clarification

The other person replies, and their contribution is then interpreted. Both directions must be agreed for the specific language pair.

Situations

Negotiations, appointments and official meetings

Working visits and training

A factory visit, process demonstration or training for a small group. The topic, route, audibility and site rules all matter.

Notaries, registry offices and institutions

Specify the institution and procedure. Before booking, check its interpreter requirements and any written documents needed.

Personal appointments and consultations

A conversation with a specialist, including a medical consultation. The topic, language task and interpreter participation are agreed in advance.

Planning

Allowing time for interpreting

Time for speaking and interpreting

The schedule covers participants’ contributions and their interpretation. Duration depends on content and pace, rather than a universal multiplier.

Breaks and waiting time

Provide start and finish times, breaks and any possible queue or delay. Agree how waiting time is counted before booking.

Several appointments or a new date

For multiple visits, give each date and address. Additional time and schedule changes require separate agreement.

Official appointments

Institutional requirements and interpreter status

The institution’s own rules

Specify the procedure and check interpreter access requirements directly with the institution. Remote attendance is not automatically accepted.

Whether sworn status is required

Consecutive describes the interpreting method; sworn describes the interpreter’s status. Check both separately for an official appointment.

Documents for the appointment

Spoken assistance does not replace written translation or certification. If documents are needed for the meeting, arrange their translation as a separate order.

Preparation

What to share before the meeting

Names and terminology

Prepare correct spellings of names, company names, abbreviations and specialist terms that participants will use.

Materials by agreement

If preparation requires a presentation or text, agree how to share it with the team. A meeting description is enough for an initial enquiry.

Participants and on-site contact

Tell us who speaks which language, whether both directions are needed and who will help the interpreter find participants or connect.

Quote

What the quote needs to cover

Languages and specialisation

Specify the language pair, directions and topic. Interpreter availability and preparation arrangements are checked for the particular task.

Meeting location and travel

Give the city, exact address or online platform. Travel and on-site participation arrangements are agreed before confirmation.

Service scope and changes

Check what the final amount includes, how extra hours are counted and what to do if the meeting is rescheduled or cancelled.

Choosing a format

When to choose a different format

When pauses do not fit

For presentations without a pause after each contribution, consider simultaneous interpreting. The team and technical setup are discussed separately.

When only one or two listeners need help

With suitable seating and audibility, whispered interpreting may be an option. For an active dialogue, plan how replies will be interpreted too.

When the format is still unclear

Compare the options on the interpreting page or describe the meeting to our team. The choice depends on the conversation and listener numbers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about consecutive interpreting

Agree contribution length with the interpreter beforehand. Speak in turn and complete each thought; there is no single interval suitable for every meeting.

Allow time for interpretation, clarification and possible waiting. The exact duration depends on the programme; a meeting does not necessarily become exactly twice as long.

This is checked for the particular language pair and topic. Give each participant’s language and both required directions in your enquiry.

Requirements depend on the procedure and institution. Check them before booking: sworn status cannot be assumed compulsory or unnecessary for every appointment.

Tell us the new date and time as soon as possible. Interpreter availability, price changes and rescheduling or cancellation conditions are agreed for your booking.

Consecutive interpreting provides spoken assistance during the conversation. Written translation, a recording or a report is not automatically included and must be agreed separately.
